Hormone and Metabolic Research Unit (HORM)

The HORM unit was established in 1982 as a result of a collaboration between Guy Rousseau, an expert in glucocorticoid hormone-regulated gene expression, and Louis Hue, co-discoverer of fructose-2,6-bisphosphate. The HORM unit is now headed by Louis Hue and comprises two research teams, "Gene Function and Regulation in Development (HORM-DEV)" and "Hormonal control by protein phosphorylation (HORM-PHOS)". The two teams are complementary in terms of expertise and they share space, equipment and financial resources. As a result of this collaboration, significant achievements were the cloning of the bifunctional enzyme 6-phosphofructo-2-kinase (PFK-2)/fructose-2,6-bisphosphatase and the study of its involvement in the control of glycolysis in proliferating cells. Other major advances have been the elucidation of the control of PFK-2 by hormones, the discovery of the Onecut transcription factors and the identification of new targets of the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK).
The HORM Unit is affiliated to the Faculty of Medicine of the Université catholique de Louvain, and its two teams are part of the ICP, a multidisciplinary research institute located on the faculty campus.
