Degrees:
- 1979 : First-class honors degree in Biochemistry, University of Bristol
- 1983 : Doctor of Philosophy in Biochemistry, University of London
- 1993: Agrégation de l'Enseignement Supérieur, Louvain University Medical School, Brussels, Belgium.
Research experience:
- 1979-1983: PhD project “Studies on the regulation of glycerol phosphate acyltransferase activity in rat epididymal adipose tissue” supervised by Prof. E.D. Saggerson, University College London
- 1983-1992: Post-doctoral research in the laboratory of L. Hue on isozymes of 6-phosphofructo-2-kinase/fructose-2,6-bisphosphatase: Structure, catalysis & regulation, Université catholique de Louvain, and ICP, Brussels, Belgium
Professional activities:
- 1996 to date – member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the European Journal of Biochemistry (now the FEBS journal)
- 1996-2000 Editor for the Biochemical Journal
- 2000-2003 Deputy Chairman of the Biochemical Journal

Research activities and scientific achievements:
Topics: control of cell function by protein phosphorylation in response to hormones, nutrients and metabolic stress.
Characterization of mammalian isozymes of 6-phosphofructo-2-kinase (PFK-2)/fructose-2,6-bisphosphatase (FBPase-2) and control by protein kinases. Mechanisms of PFK-2 activation by insulin in heart. Mechanisms of catalysis and substrate binding in the PFK-2 reaction. New targets of AMPK and control by upstream kinases.
