Jean-Francois studied bioengineering at the Universite catholique de Louvain. After graduating in 1995, he did his PhD thesis in the Metabolic Research Group where he studied the mechanism of phosphoserine phosphatase, an enzyme of the serine biosynthesis pathway and discovered a new family of phosphotransferases forming an aspartyl-phosphate intermediate. In March 2001, Jean-Francois joined the Bardwell lab at the University of Michigan to study disulfide bond formation in E. coli.
In April 2004, he moved back to the Metabolic Research Group to continue his research on disulfide bond formation.
